what is an au pair?
A single male or female aged between 17 - 27 years, inclusive with no
dependants, normally with basic English (the standard varies with each
person) and a desire to study a foreign language and experience a
different culture. An au pair can stay up to two years. Usually au
pairs have no previous experience in childcare but have had experiences
in babysitting/summer camps.
An au pair is not a domestic servant, housekeeper or trained nanny and should be treated as part of your family.
the meaning of au pair
These words come from the French meaning "at par", meaning "equal to"
and therefore an Au Pair comes to live as part of the family, being
treated as a family member. They have their own bedroom, eat with the
family and take part in the occasional family outing or possibly a
holiday.
which countries are included in the au pair scheme?
An au pair must be a national of one of the following countries:
Andorra, Faroe Islands, Monaco, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Greenland, Poland,
Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Latvia, San Marino, Cyprus,
Lithuania, Slovak Republic, Czech Republic, Macedonia, Slovenia,
Estonia, Malta, Turkey
Although European Economic Area nationals are not included in the au
pair scheme, they are free to come to the UK to take au pair placements.
who needs a visa?
Nationals of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia and Turkey must get a visa before they travel to the UK. A letter of
invitation is required from the host family in order to obtain this
