useful info

travel to/from the UK
It is the au pairs responsibility to arrange and pay for the journey to the UK but once in the UK the family is responsible for collecting the au pair from either an airport or train/bus station. This will be agreed before departure. It is essential that the Au Pair buys a return ticket or has enough money to pay for their return journey home.

medical/insurance cover
EU nationals are entitled to free medical treatment in the UK under the National Health Service and must register with a GP on arrival. Au Pairs from other countries should check that there is a reciprocal agreement between their own country and the UK and ensure that they have adequate medical and accident insurance cover. If there are any doubts this should be checked with the relevant embassy which will certainly know of the rights of its citizens in the UK. Dental treatment is usually not part of the NHS.

driving in the uk
Standards of driving vary considerably from country to country so it is recommended that you give the au pair one or two driving lessons to satisfy yourselves of the au pairs ability to drive. If the au pair is from an EU country then their driving licence will be valid but if they are from a non-EU country then an international driving licence is required as well.

language school
Most au pairs want to go to a language school of which the family should help to find and register. The au pair is responsible for the cost of the school but some families will make a contribution towards this cost.

use of telephone
It is up to the family whether the au pair can use the family phone. Please discuss this with the au pair on arrival and mention about the cheapest times to call etc. Phone cards are available from a newsagent and are the cheapest way to make international and national phone calls. These can be used in a phone box or from the house usually with free access but please check the type of card first as there are lots to chose from.

police registration
Nationals from certain countries need to register with the police within seven days of arriving. Au pairs will be informed upon arrival in the UK if they need to do this.

To register, the au pair will need to take their passport and two passport sized photographs. The fee is approx £35 which the au pair is responsible for.

miscellaneous
Hours may vary depending on the arrangement you can come to with your au pair. Flexibility plays a big role and can make both the au pair and family happier.

Au pairs are entitled to one weeks paid holiday for every six months.

All au pairs have two full days off per week and are not expected to baby-sit on these evenings unless there is some arrangement between the au pair and family.

The family may ask the au pair to do additional duties of which they should give extra pocket money in return. This should be agreed between family and au pair.

Very young children should only be left in sole charge under the family's discretion.
